They say tango is a feeling.

You would understand this simple statement better if I could convince you to fly to Buenos Aires and start your own journey to the music, the poetry, the dance and the culture that has transformed the lives of people all over the world. My journey started 12 years ago, though the groundwork had been laid years before, in the fifties, when my mother sang "Jealousy" in the kitchen as she swept the floor. There is a long tradition in Argentina of dancing tango with a broom - bet no one there could believe that it was also happening in a kitchen thousands of miles away in Bangor, Maine.

It was a March day in 1994 when I arrived in Buenos Aires for the first time. It was autumn in South America, and Easter at the same time. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, you'll understand why that seemed so strange. It was hot - steamy. I was with a group of tango fanatics from around the world. As we waited for the bus that would take us from Ezeiza airport to tango Mecca, one of the group started leading a tango on the hot tarmac. Right there, the first tango in Argentina.

My first tango in Buenos Aires was a shock. An elegantly dressed older man indicated that he would dance with me. He escorted me to a carefully selected spot on the dance floor, and just stood there, waiting for something, as the music began. I wondered if he had changed his mind about dancing with blond, Norte Americana. Then, at some mysterious signal, he raised his arms to wrap me in my first tango embrace. I had taken a few tango workshops in Boston and Montreal and felt confident that I understood how the tango worked. My first mistake, but it's how I learned that tango is not just a series of proscribed steps. Tango is a feeling. It's the feeling of moving with another body, in synch, in concert, in harmony, with syncopation, with pauses, with communication, and with trust. The feeling of letting go of all the issues of the day, melding with another in a room full of others, all hearing the same song and all dancing their own dance. When you experience that, you understand what they mean when they say "Tango is a love affair the length of a song". For me it has been the love affair which most changed my life.
